How Do Transition Lenses Work?

Transition lenses contain a layer of photochromic dye that changes colour, or gets darker when exposed to ultraviolet rays and gets lighter or becomes clear when there are little to no UV rays. It is a common misconception that it is a coating to the exterior surface of the lens, whereas it is actually a layer within the lens.
