Children and Dry Eyes

Children can very commonly suffer from dry eye, particularly as they can spend large periods of their day viewing computer or television screens, and performing a great deal of concentrated close work.

Dry Eye Syndrome is very common in the UK with 1 in 4 people suffering from the condition. Although it is rarer in children, it is becoming more prevalent; particularly as they can spend large periods of their day viewing computer or television screens, and performing a great deal of concentrated close work (reading and writing). They are often unable to identify their symptoms or unable to communicate their symptoms to their parents or carers.

Dry eye syndrome can make it more difficult for children to perform well in the classroom. Burning, irritated and itchy eyes, along with increased blinking, can interfere with focusing in school. Common daily activities, such as reading, playing sports and using computers can become extremely challenging with Dry Eye symptoms.

Common signs and symptoms of Dry Eye Syndrome in children can include:

  • Tired eyes by the end of the day

  • Red eyes, particularly after school and in the evenings

  • Frequent pronounced blinking

  • Frequent rubbing of the eyes

  • Complaints of transient blurred vision, which improves on blinking or eye rubbing

How do we Diagnose Children with Dry Eyes?

Just like adults, children need to have a Dry Eye Assessment to investigate the symptoms and diagnose any dry eye. During the dry eye assessment, we will use a number of diagnostic procedures to help design the most effective dry eye management plan.

What to do if You Think Your Child May Have Dry Eyes?

The first thing to do would be to contact us to book your child in for a Childrens Eye Examination. During this appointment, the Optometrist will advise whether a Dry Eye Assessment would be beneficial for your child. If your child has had a routine eye examination in the past 12 months, then we may book your child in directly for a Dry Eye Assessment.

Dry Eye Assessment Duration: Allow 40 Minutes

Dry Eye Assessment Cost: £70
